Quick general question, if I change my crank say from a 44 - 30 to a 40 - 28, do I need to change the chain length?

Thanks for any advice.

You would be able to get away with it but it wouldnt be spot on.

Big big should be fine (if your into cross chaining...) just check little little combo to see if its too slack, then simply remove a link or three if it needs it.

Slacker chain might be prone to jumping off on the front downshift - your chain should be as long as is required to go around the big ring and big rear cog without going thru the derailleur and only just join up when your suspension is at the point of max chain growth. You might want to take some links out.
