MTB overnighter

Carlgroover's picture

By Carlgroover - Posted on 06 April 2008

I've been thinking for a while that an overnighter in the Blue Mountains would be a lot of fun, especially one where everybody wasn't racing the following day so that after some great riding a few refreshments could be enjoyed around a campfire.
The rides I had in mind for the Saturday was Anderson's and then some nice riding around Terrace Falls and on the Sunday Linden Ridge Rd and Dawes Ridge, we could end it there or head down the Oaks or St. Helenas, So I'm looking for suggestions on how this could best work and what date would be suitable. I also don't think the place we would be camping should be publicly visible so I would pm that to interested people. I could also have a gas barbie there and firewood.
Cheers John.

Thats sounds fantastic John. Would love to join.

I'm not going to nominate a date or "itenery" as the better half often travels at short notice so may not be able to make it despite my best intentions.

Please keep me informed though

Stuart

I'd be up for some of that. Any chance of including Lockyers Rd? Good, fun singletrack!

Carlgroover's picture

With the area, I'm keen to do Lockyers but for this trip we'd have to have 2 days of riding organised and a spot to camp, also maybe better that far west at a warmer time of year, we could do Lockyers in a day trip, I'm keen.
John.

John, last spring I wanted to plan a ride of the 6 foot track it is now autumn and I've done nothing. This might be ideal for your camping ride as either a location or part of the ride.

P.S. Cox's River has a dedicated camping area along the track.

Matt P's picture

is now limited isn't it? I think you can only ride from the cemetery to the suspension bridge (still a great ride), then limited riding up towards the main caves road.

I'm not exactly sure which parts you can ride but am pretty sure you cannot ride all of it.

Paul's picture

Correct, you can't ride all the way from Jenolan Cave to Katoomba like you once could.

Cycling is permitted on the track between Megalong Valley Road and Jenolan Caves Rd so its mainly the escapement up to Norths Lookout/Explorers Tree you can't ride - anyway that is the path of a thousand steps.

You can take Megalong Valley Rd from the Great Western maybe 10k's on the road from Katoomba.
Then acording to the map
Megalong Cemetery to Cox's River 7.5k
Cox's River to the crest of the Black Range 10.5k
Crest of Black Range to Black Range camping ground 10.5k
Black Range camp to Jenolan Caves 8.5k.

Climbing up to 1200 metres from the low point of Cox's river (200m)

Carlgroover's picture

I've only ridden from Megalong to 5ks past the Coxs river and back and I'm keen to ride from Black Range to Megalong valley but haven't got around to it due to the major shuttle issue it causes, and I don't think there's any public transport to Black Range.
If between us we could plan a weekend of riding up there, that would be great riding unfamilar tracks, but I don't know it well so open to suggestions. Smiling
John.

Tom_B's picture

Not fussed about which track we do, obviously date depending, but with a little advanced notice should be able to make it.

pikey's picture

Anything that involves Bikes and Beer is right up my ally.

Any chance of Boobs on bikes joining us?? I hope so Sticking out tongue

An open fire would be a winner.

Pikey

Flynny's picture

You can do a loop from Black range down the better parts of the SFT and then back out via Lowther fire rd. This negates the need for a shuttle. i haven't done it as yet but am told it's a goer.

If you want an easier ride day 2. Blackheath to Hanging rock is nice, short but great veiws all fire rd but lots and lots of water bars and fun DH sections both ways, then back to Blackheath and either:

Out along the rail access road towards Meadlow Bath. Just before Meadlow there is a trail off to the right. I haven't ridden it for ages but there use to be a great run down to the Sun Bath (More awesome views) and a network of small trails below the Hydro Magestic.

or

Follow the rail access road to Mt Vic (some detours around the fence line make good little rides) and hence Mt York

Please add me to the list

Hey, what a great idea, a weekend away riding in the hills followed by a refreashment or two!!!!
I should be able to make most weekends.
Keep us informed as to the possible dates.

Fingers crossed for a possible date Smiling

This is the sort of thing lizzie and I did a lot of - count us in. Oh, I'd better go tell her now...

Morgan's picture

Count the Rohloff in, dates permitting.

anke13's picture

...I'd be interested.

Hans's picture

sounds like a great idea... especially when having someone in the group with local knowledge of the Blue Mtns tracks.

Count me in - I am usually available at short notice.

Are we carrying packs or pre-arranging a "follow vehicle" to be met with the camping gear/refreshments somewhere?

Rgds, Hans

Andy Bloot's picture

I just did a weekender pack walk over the top of Mt Solitary
Missed my bike terribly (and my wife too of course)
Would be nice to have her along next time (my bike that is)

Carlgroover's picture

Due to some nasty virus's getting the better of my PC it's been away for a re-format. I'm now back with a nice pure hard drive. I've thought about the doing the weekend further west but feel that I'd have to first do a couple of weekends out there to organise it properly. I want to try the loop Flynny suggested on the Six Foot Track and check some of the other riding and camping possibilities out there, like Lockyers as Matt P suggested and organise something for a later date. In the meantime I should stick to what I know will be a good weekend.
To avoid the date being too close to the Dirtworks race many of us are camping at I'm suggesting 3 weeks after it which would be the 24/5/08
The plan, park at Woodford station take the train to Wentworth Falls, ride Andersons and have a break for some early lunch before doing up to 3 hrs of really good single track/fire roads in the Hazelbrook/Lawson area, the folk that did the mid Mountain tour are familiar with this area, but I'll be doing the improved loop that I've been riding with sweet flowing single track, water bars and some technical up and down (for Liam). Then back to the cars and drive to the camping spot (no fees type) with drop toilet. As I mentioned earlier this spot has an awesome fire place and I will arrange the firewood and bring a gas barbie to cook dinner.
If your not fond of alcohol you could bring your lights and do a night ride.
Sunday morning pack up, slip over to Linden and ride Linden ridge road (fire road) and Dawes ridge single track that seems mostly downhill in both directions, this track is nice mildly technical, quite fast and a bit over grown eye wear strongly recommended and long sleeves if your soft.

pikey's picture

We are not worthy of your guidance!

Being fond of alcohol we shall anoint you on said evening with brewed and distilled offerings!

Learn from you we will.

his stuff (Pikey), follow his lead and if the suggested timetable suits the majority I'll post it up.
John.

GAZZA's picture

sounds great!

Carlgroover's picture

I just did a count of the interested including myself and my non internet equipped friend Craig B got a total of 14 people which should make a great weekend so I'll post it up.
John.

Bruce's picture

you can make that 15 people interested John, sounds like its going to be a top weekend.

anke13's picture

I am running the SMH half marathon on the 18th, so should have recovered and be fit for a weekend's worth of riding. Only problem I have, I don't have a tent. Has anyone got space in their's? Cheers, Anke

Carlgroover's picture

I can lend you a tent Anke
John

anke13's picture

...Thanks, John. I'll send you a PM closer to the date.

Bernd's picture

.... you missed out!!!
Bernd

Stuart M's picture

share with John Eye-wink

Besides Bernd, it's hard to offer to share a tent with someone when you don't have a tent. I thought I'd be in the van with you

Bernd's picture

...is thought!!!!!
Bernd

Carlgroover's picture

tent Stuart, but put a few beers into me and in a tent with Anke I may suffer a few impure thoughts, however Stuart I couldn't see you being a problem. Now this post looks so Gay.

Stuart M's picture

I don't really want to share any tent you've pitched, regardless of how much beer is consumed, if you know what I mean

Stuart M's picture

Hope I got that translation right

Bernd's picture

...bad, Stuart!
Bernd

anke13's picture

Bernd if you can make any sense of Stuart's message.

Bernd's picture

..he wanted me to offer you the spot in the back of my van and we could have had a chat until the morning hours about the German Motherland!!!
right, Stuart?
Bernd

Stuart M's picture

really comes from the motherland and which one of you is an imposter, or are you from Austria, Anke? Eye-wink

petulance's picture

but I always thought it was

Germany - fatherland
Russia - motherland

Unless all those Battle Action comics that I read when I was growing up were wrong.

Stuart M's picture

that's too knowledgeable for me mate, you might have to ask someone that knows

christine's picture

May 24 then?
I am keen but if it's that weekend i will have to shuffle other stuff around so i can come along too...

anke13's picture

...you cannot possibly speak German and not know that it's the fatherland not the motherland.

Carlgroover's picture

Christine, I chose that date as it doesn't clash with other races and is 3 weeks after the Dirtworks which will help some get an OK from their partners.
Cheers

christine's picture

will do then!
love camping!

Bernd's picture

... a Van?!?!
Bernd

anke13's picture

...ladies exactly are you planning to get into your van???

Stuart M's picture

that would be 2

Hans's picture

Nobmob goes bi-lingual - love it!

Gruezie, Hans

Bernd's picture

... that, Hans, I have to brew a Hefe Weizen!!!

Hans

Stuart M's picture

some more of your home brew wheat / yeast beer would be great but Hans I'm not sure about the yodelling under Echo Point

I will share some of your red wine and Bratwurst though.

Anke, it looks like you're sorted with Hans having room in his 4 man tent for you as well. Eye-wink
Everyone upto speed now?
