I was brought up to believe if you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything at all. On that basis I have nothing to say about this years Fling.

Some points I will mention, the 1st stage went well, I managed to stick with the lead groups....just! When I set off on the final stage I was 15th in category and then gave up another 14 category places not to mention numerous overall places.

My legs still hurt!

I was really hoping that you would have a good race Gary and expected as much. You've been training and riding well and looking strong on the hills and longer rides to build endurance.

Maybe the start was a bit too hard and drinking/eating played it's part in the cramps you were suffering - but there are so many variables so root cause would be hard to determine. It was certainly a tough race. As we talked about at the end maybe some 4 hour races would help you a little more in managing your efforts.

In any case it's a shame that the race turned out as it did for you. Go out and smash the Husky instead..

While it might not have been what you were hoping for, looking at the overall and category from last year its an improvement.

For me, the hardest thing with racing is knowing your limit and how many matches can you burn before your body has had enough. I think that's why things go bad in stage 3 of the Fling or Womerah Range in The Convict etc.

Gary sorry to hear you had a shite race, I think most of us on this forum have had a bad race, i know i have. Three most probable clauses would be 1) fueling including hydration, 2) going out to hard - personally i think you should rather push yourself in the beginning and suffer at the end as opposed taking it too easy over first 2 hours, you never make up the lost time 3) one of the more important things is that people don't rest sufficiently before the race. I start scaling back on my training 2 weeks before the race and hardly do anything in the week leading up, being fresh and rested makes a massive difference. You only need to look at some of the guys coming off the Croc trophy, many of them struggled as they were just too tired and run down.

Good luck with Husky, you'll bounce bike, just like Mike did after a horrible fling last year.

While the result wasn't what you hoped for, your form has been excellent and as is usual for the Fling the race was a real test. Keep it up and see you out there for the next event.

The plus is that I still placed higher than previous years so I think that says a lot about the conditions and that things are heading in the right direction.

Will keep working on the nutrition and hydration and building a solid base hopefully with some 4hr events. The 1st stage didn't feel any harder than previous years so that was also encouraging.

I'll look forward to racing you all again next year unless there a few late comers to the Husky. Thanks Guy's.
