Bike discounts - can anyone explain why?

Over the last six months I have used the bikeexchange site to check on bike prices.

What I have noticed is the LBS in Queensland, Victoria and Western Australia will usually be offering the bike at a price below the RRP.

In Sydney, it's almost guaranteed that the bike will only be available at the RRP.

Can anyone offer a reasonable explanation why this is?

Usually there are what is called a close out model,
eg last years model in a 21" size in pink.

ask your LBS (provided you buy all your stuff there) for a discount.

id show you an example but that would be advertising my store.

When I was looking for a new bike early last year I looked into a few of those deals. With the exception of Jonny Sprockets in Toowoomba all of the bikes had been sold some time ago. When I enquired as to why the bikes were still listed the response was usually "oh I haven't taken it down." Some then went on to try and sell me a current model, but many left it at that. A curious marketing model.

In the end I had 2 great deals to choose between here locally at BB and BBF.

Market driven.

If they are able sell all their stuff at full rrp why would they discount? It would be like going to work and telling the boss to discount your wage 15% because you're in a good mood today

If, they have stock they are having trouble moving, or have gotten cheap from the wholesaler as new models are due in, then sure they'd discount

for the cynics, that's gotta make up for some of the 'advertised specials'
