Womerah Range Training Ride

As discussed in the DW thread, reckon it would be a good idea to go get some training in on these hills. Especially the big climbes on the Womerah Range.

Anyone interested? Proposed dates? How about last two weekends in March? How about aiming for March 22/23 Oops... Easter, how about March 15/16?

I would propose to meet at the West (turn left, not right bottom of the hill) ferry and leave cars there, riding the 5Km or so to bottom of the climb so as to be warm for that. Then ride the Womerah Range trail.

On getting to the top of Jack's Track descent (the descent is about 2Km with 200m vertical) there would be options:

  • We could descend, turn round, climb and do the whole thing in reverse. Tough option as Jack's Track is very (silly) steep. By adding 3Km we would be able to pootle into St Albans for supplies. Ride would end up either 48Km or 52Km if we went to St Albans.
  • We could descent then ride back on the road (22Km to the ferry). Dull and silly option. Ride would end up 46Km.
  • We could turn round and ride back the way we came but without killing ourselves on Jack's Track climb. Probably the most sensible choice. Ride would end up around 45Km.

Thoughts?

I'm up for this and option 1 or 3 look good. One issue I have with the dates is 22/23 is on the Easter long weekend and at this stage I might be going away. Cheers Brian.

Would like to do this any option suits any day on easter weekend is fine otherwise Sundays are my prefered day.

we could ride the way you suggest but instead of turning around to retrace our path we could continue on from St.Albans & ride up to the gnr the way that is used in the first half of the hundred, that way everyone will know what they are in for.

Your option 4 is worthy Bruce, but sadly the only way out if you go up there is to complete the entire loop, thus pretty much doing the whole 100Km course. Plus, I think the Wrights Creek climb is on private property.

Nice, but not right now then Sticking out tongue

thats exacty what we should do. I was speaking to some guys last week that have been riding the first loop of the 100 with no problems.

I have never ridden there and infact never 100kms. During the race there are water stops to refill? Are these still available at other times? If not, how much would you need to carry to be safe?
PS. Without checking with my other half, I am ok for either the 15th or 16th.

OK, maybe later, Bruce. Can we stick to something more 'normal' for this first training expedition though?

Pretty please? Eye-wink

Last year in the race itself there were water stations at 28, 50 & 72Km. Water hog I am, even I found that ample. Erm... but then again I didn't drink enough. Doh!

For this training thing if we don't plan on going to St Albans then take a lot of water. I'd be chugging a bottle before we left then carrying 3 litres in the hydration pack and another bottle (probably with Endura/Gatorade mix) in the cage. If it was a stinking hot day I might stuff another in the backpack too. Would also be taking a few food bars, some salted nuts, dried fruit, etc. Better to be safe than sorry.

but only since you asked nicely Rob.

Yes please a sensible start to the training would be good can do the 16th.

Sounds good to me.

It sounds like you are some sort of super man, so I would probably meet you for the start and then tell you how I did back on this forum Smiling

I am keen though, so put me down for a tentative.

Actually I cant do the 16th just remembered I am going to race in the WSMTB Club XC series this year and the first race is on the 16th.

Brian's picture

I have checked and I am all clear for either day.

Rob, I'd be up for it but can only do the Sunday (16th) which I see doesn't suit others. Either way, look forward to meeting you on the trails soon.
